To read someone accurately, watch them during a relaxed moment. Talk about the weather or a movie. Do they cross their legs? Do they look you in the eye? Once you know their normal behavior, you can spot "deviations." A deviation is a change in that normal pattern. If a normally talkative person suddenly becomes very still and quiet, that is a red flag. That change tells you that their emotional state has shifted.

  • Leaning In: When we like someone or agree with an idea, we lean toward them. It is a sign of rapport. If someone suddenly leans back or "tucks" their chin, they are creating distance because they dislike what they are hearing.
  • The Steeple: If you see someone join their fingertips together like a tent (the "steeple" gesture), they feel very confident. You will often see bosses or experts do this when they know they have the upper hand.

Reading the Face and Eyes

The face is complex, but a few simple rules can help you navigate it.

  • The Real Smile: A fake smile only uses the mouth. A real smile—called a Duchenne smile—reaches the eyes. Look for small "crow’s feet" wrinkles at the corners of the eyes. If the eyes aren't smiling, the person isn't truly happy.
  • Eye Contact: Too little eye contact can mean someone is shy or hiding something. However, too much eye contact can be a sign of aggression or a forced attempt to look honest. Aim for a natural balance.
  • Blocking: If someone rubs their eyes or covers them for a second while you speak, they are "blocking" the information. Their brain literally does not want to see or hear what is happening.

Hand Gestures and Touching

Watch where people put their hands. Hands that are open and visible suggest honesty. Hands hidden in pockets or under a desk suggest that the person is holding something back.

Pay close attention to pacifying behaviors. These are small movements people do to calm themselves down when they feel stressed. Examples include:

  • Rubbing the back of the neck.
  • Adjusting a necklace or tie.
  • Massaging the temples.
  • Smoothing out clothing repeatedly.

When you see these behaviors, you know the person is feeling internal pressure. They are trying to "pet" themselves to stay calm.
