Every process system starts with a pipe. Before the valves, the instruments, the pumps, and the fittings, there is the pipe carrying the fluid from one point to the next, under pressure, across distances, through conditions that range from ambient temperature water to superheated steam or aggressive chemicals. Definition:

Through a process system, an industrial pipe is a hollow cylinder used to transport fluids, gases, steam, or slurries. Their exterior diameter, wall thickness (represented as a schedule), material grade, and production process define pipes. The pipe must be precisely defined for all four of these parameters so it may reliably and securely fulfill its purpose.

There are two general production groups for pipes. Seamless pipes are created by penetrating a solid metal billet and have no weld seam, thus making them more homogenous and robust—thus the preferred alternative for high-pressure and high-temperature use. Flat plate or strip make welded pipes, which are cheaper for structural and low-pressure uses. 

How does it Work?

While permitting fluid to pass through its bore, a pipe has internal pressure. The design pressure and temperature determine the wall thickness; greater pressures and temperatures call for thicker walls. The fluid being carried, the operating temperature, and the corrosive environment the pipe will be exposed to in operation all influence the selection of the material.

Carrying dry natural gas at moderate pressure, a carbon steel pipe is rather basic. Stainless steel pipe transporting corrosive chemicals at high temperature is not. Before the pipeline enters service, every case calls for a different grading, schedule, testing and inspection requirements.
