Why Your Cologne Is the Most Underrated Part of Your Grooming Routine

I have a confession to make. I had to get my brother a bottle of Paco Rabanne for Christmas a couple of years ago. I was proud of my choice for a number of reasons; the bottle was nice, it was a brand I could recognize, and I got it the personal approval of the sales person at the department store where I bought it. He warmly thanked me and placed it on his bathroom shelf and that was all I would ever see him do. Not once. Dangled there for two years next to a tube of deodorant and a waning stick of hair wax for a couple of years until it slipped away in secret.

In the main, that is the scent giving challenge summed up. Their motives are noble. Hard delivery. But the failure rate is greater than nearly any other gift category is, not because people make poor selections, but because they're the most personal gift category, and we're not all schooled in the thought.

Since that Christmas, I've learned all this.

There are some reasons why fragrance is difficult to purchase for others.

Cologne is unlike a book or a jumper, the perfume will play with those whom it is worn. The same perfume can have what feels like a different scent on two different people — sometimes it can be very different. Ecosmart scents change once they come into contact with the skin as a result of body chemistry, the natural bodily oils, skin temperature, diet, even some medications. If you're familiar with natural perfumes, you'll know how unexpected those two scents can be for two people. This is not a characteristic of the perfume. It's the way things are.

That is the reason why it's a pointless test if you spray a bottle in a shop and say in your mind "oh that smells nice". You aren't smelling the fragrance on the person you are buying for, you are smelling the fragrance on a paper strip, or the air. The first impression or top notes go away after twenty minutes. The remainder for the next 6 to 8 hours is what's left: Skin chemistry.

Hence so many good-hearted folks decide to go back to candles, bath sets and gift cards. The key though; it is quite possible to do this correctly if you have the approach!

Starting from the beginning!Step One is "Look Before You Buy".

Before stepping near to the fragrance counter, the one most valuable thing you can do is to study. But not in a "watch out" kind of way, just listen to what the person already does.

Do they wear cologne? If they do, the question is simplified. Have a look at their equipment. Determine whose house it is — Dior? Tom Ford? Chanel? — Just watch what kind of product they opt for every day. Does it look clean and fresh, like in a Sauvage or is it Acqua di Gio? Warm and woody (Bleu de Chanel, Terre d'Hermès)? Rich and sweetful? (Tom Ford Black Orchid, La Nuit de L'Homme)? Understanding what kind of scent your loved one prefers you can choose a different perfume line within the same neighborhood without just picking up a copy of his or her current scent.

Even if they don't wear any perfume, this is helpful knowledge as well. It could be that they have a heightened sense of smell making them sensitive to strong fragrances, or just that they haven't come across any scents that resonate with them. If so, tilt light. Clean, simple, natural smokes like florals, citrus and aquatics, are far less likely to intrude upon someone that does not typically wear scent.

We ever said something about another person's odor? If you have ever heard the question: "What are you wearing? shrugged or "You smell incredible!" make an effort to discover what this fragrance was. The best possible lead is that one.

Step Two: Take advantage of samples. Always.

It's the one practice that makes everything different with perfume-giving and few people can do it.

Most of the online fragrance shops that sell online fragrance samples or decants come in sizes varying from 1ml to 10ml and are offered for a couple of pounds or dollars such as Escentual, Fragrance Direct, Scentbird and other various stores. So before soda shopping for a full bottle, which could cost laPounds and six, laPounds and eight, or even two hundred pounds, three to four pounds is a good investment that will let you get it on that person you're buying it for, before you invest in the rest of the bottle.

This can be done indirectly. Apply just enough to their wrist when you're together, saying something like, “I'm trying this out for the first time; I wanted a second opinion”. Let sit for 20 minutes, until the dominant notes have settled in, then ask, "What do you think? If they continue to sniff their wrist, you've got it! But if the marks gets transferred onto their jeans, well that one most likely will not be a winner.

It's a very short process, and will spare you the particular travesty of having something so expensive languishing in a corner somewhere.

Step Three: Know which Houses are worth your money

The scent business is vast and not all the components are good. There are hundreds of brands that make technically sufficient colognes which will smell nice for about an hour and then just leave. There are also houses creating remarkable creations, which deliver more than mere pleasant, wearable scents, and that's on several levels, performed at different price levels.

It is well worth taking the time before you launch into serious shopping and read a good overview of the top 10 perfume brands for male. Rumbling the top aroma brands from the past such as Creed, Chanel, to those from the present, like Tom Ford & Maison Francis Kurkdjian for example, they provide honest assessments of what each house does best, what sets them apart and their price range, and the kind of people they target. Someone else has done it for you and it takes hours to do it yourself.
